A pharmacy degree provides a unique skill set that leads in many different career directions, not just a place. The part that today’s pharmacists play in health care will continue to evolve and expand as the world becomes more aware of these growing skill sets. At the UMKC School of Pharmacy, our graduates reflect this by working in a vast array of health care fields.
Amen Ogunmekan (’06) is a medical science liaison (MSL) with Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a biotech company working to develop therapies for people with neurological disorders. Here is a look at her unique role as a pharmacist and how she got where she is today.
How would you describe your current role as a pharmacist?
I work with clinical researchers on publications to help analyze and prepare information to be disseminated to clinicians. I also establish and maintain relationships with leading physicians, researchers and clinicians who are key opinion leaders at academic institutions, hospitals, clinics and other health care settings. I help clinicians ensure that medications are used effectively and safely. I also serve as a scientific resource and expert, advising on upcoming advances in treatments and providing input about relevant scientific and clinical data.
What do you enjoy most about your particular job?
I most enjoy the research and the flexibility. Some days, I take my laptop and tablet and find a quite park or Starbucks and just work from there. I also enjoyed the travel and being able to help a wide-ranging patient population. There is really no typical day for me. It really depends on meetings, conferences or new research that I’m working on. But that’s what keeps it interesting.
How do you see the role of pharmacists in the future?
Pharmacy will continue to evolve and there are so many more roles and opportunities for pharmacists today. We just need to be more informed. Pharmacy practice is an amazing career with limitless opportunities. I would encourage anyone interested in pharmacy to do their research, network with practicing pharmacists in different specialties and keep their options open.
Why did you decide on Pharmacy as a career choice?
I always knew that I wanted to be in health care. I grew up in a family of providers. My dad is a retired physician and mom started her early career as a dental hygienist and later became a licensed clinical social worker. So, the real question was, which route to go? My plans when I started pharmacy school were to graduate, complete a residency training and become a psychiatry or oncology pharmacist.
Why should someone consider the UMKC School of Pharmacy?
The UMKC School of Pharmacy curriculum is one of the best I have seen. I have precepted a lot of students over the years and I am certain that UMKC has students prepared to enter the workforce. UMKC exposed me to different areas of pharmacy with the variety of organizations, as well the many elective classes that were offered. There is a broad range of faculty with different specialties, who have amazing connections to the community and professional organizations, and who are good mentors/advisors. When I was at UMKC, I had great mentors. I told them my interests and they helped guide me. At the same time, they allowed me to explore other opportunities.
Do you find time for fun outside of work?
I enjoy planning events, wedding and parties so I do about 6 to 8 events a year. I also love to bake and go dancing with friends.
