Pharmacy Students Receive Women’s Council Graduate Assistance Awards

Pharmacy students and others from the school accept awards from the Women's Council Graduate Assistance Fund reception

Four students at the School of Pharmacy were recognized as recipients of the 2019 UMKC Women’s Council Graduate Assistance Fund awards during a reception by the Women’s Council at the Grand Street Cafe on March 7.

The students, Danielle Thomas, Vrinda Gote, Maryam Nakhjiri and Taj Yeruva, were selected from a pool of applicants from throughout UMKC. All four are in the school’s Interdisciplinary-Ph.D. program with a major emphasis on pharmaceutical sciences.

The awards are given to UMKC women students in post-baccalaureate approved programs. They are used to assist students in completing requirements for graduation and first professional degrees, facilitate studies beyond the classroom, and to enrich and encourage educational experiences.

Thomas will use the award to support her project, “Using Genetic Editing as an Effective Breast Cancer Therapeutic.” Gote is exploring the potential of nanomicellar eye drops as a treatment of age-related macular degeneration and retinopathy. Nakhjiri is working on a potential novel drug for prostate cancer therapy. Yeruva received the award to support her research, “Enzyme Triggered Release of Entry Inhibitor for HIV Prevention,” and to attend the 2019 annual meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.
