SCHOLARSHIPS
2008-09

The following scholarships are open to doctor of pharmacy or graduate students meeting the specified criteria.  The recipients of these scholarships are selected by the School of Pharmacy Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee, unless specified otherwise, during the fall semester.
 

Fred Angle Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Christina Ferguson, a 2007 alumnus, in honor of her grandfather, Fred Angle.  It is awarded to a professional pharmacy student in their third, fourth or fifth year, with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.  Preference is given to a student who indicates as their first choice a career with a community pharmacy and who has preferably served an internship with a community pharmacy.

 

Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a fifth-year professional pharmacy student with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.  Preference is given to a student who indicates as their first choice a career with a hospital pharmacy following graduation and who plans to stay in the Kansas City metropolitan area following graduation.

 

Wright V. & Gladys A. Bartholomew Scholarship

This scholarship is a memorial to long-time Rock Port, Missouri pharmacist Wright V. Bartholomew.  It is awarded to students who are entering the third semester of the professional program, who intend to enter community practice upon graduation.  Pending satisfactory academic performance, these scholarships can be renewed for a maximum of four additional semesters.

 

Mary Bisceglia Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Bud Bisceglia, a 1953 alumnus, in memory of his wife, Mary.  It is awarded to a second- or third-year student interested in community pharmacy practice.

 

Lewis Bratt Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Edith Bratt in memory of her husband, Lewis Bratt, a 1936 alumnus.  It is awarded to a student who has an interest in independent community pharmacy.

 

G. Thomas Bruns, R.Ph. Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mike and Cindy Mense in memory of Cindy’s father, Tom Bruns (class of 1958), to support students seeking a career in independent pharmacy.  Two scholarships are awarded to students who are in good standing academically.  Preference is given to applicants in their third, fourth or fifth year, with an expressed interest in a career in an independent pharmacy with plans to practice in either the Missouri or Kansas metropolitan area following graduation.  Applicants who have a past work experience with the U.S. military and/or positive leadership involvement with the state, county or local legislature are also given preference in the selection process.

 

Century Club Clinical Scholarship

This scholarship was established by donations to the Pharmacy Foundation, and is awarded to a third-year student whose dedication to the area of clinical pharmacy is reflected by their desire to complete a doctor of pharmacy degree or pursue clinical practice.

 

Century Club Hospital Scholarship

This scholarship was established by donations to the Pharmacy Foundation, and is awarded to a third-year student whose dedication to the area of hospital pharmacy is reflected by their desire to complete a doctor of pharmacy degree or pursue hospital practice.

 

D & H Prescription Drug Store Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the satellite doctor of pharmacy program located on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, who:  is a high school graduate of Audrain, Boone, Cole, Cooper or Callaway counties in Missouri; is currently a Missouri resident; and indicates a preference for a career in an independent pharmacy following graduation.  The scholarship was established by Blaine Alberty, a 1973 alumnus, along with Darran Alberty, Gene Forrester and Triston Brownfield.

 

Dean's Advisory Council Scholarship

This scholarship was established by donations from members of the School of Pharmacy Dean’s Advisory Council.  It is awarded to a professional pharmacy student in their third, fourth or fifth year, who demonstrates extraordinary leadership qualities. Preference is given to a student who has held an elected office while in pharmacy school or has developed an innovative service project.

 

Leslie Eisenbrandt Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Leslie Eisenbrandt, who served as the dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1953 to 1966.  It is awarded to a student in years three through five of the professional pharmacy program who is excelling academically.

 

Erickson Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Steve (class of 1975) and Clydean Erickson.  Preference for the award is given to a student who is a direct descendant of J. Stephen Erickson and/or K. Clydean Erickson and/or their brothers or sisters; employed by The Drug Store of Cameron, Missouri and from a town of less than 20,000 in population or is employed by a privately held (independent) pharmacy company.

 

Mary and Tim Euler Student Mentor Award

This award was established by Tim and Mary (class of 2000) Euler.  Mary was formerly the Executive Director of the Pharmacy Foundation, and Associate Dean at the UMKC School of Pharmacy.  The award is given to a professional pharmacy student in their fourth or fifth year, with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.  Preference is given to a student who has sustained leadership on behalf of the School of Pharmacy; who has served as a role model and mentor to other students aspiring to leadership positions, and shows care and concern for his/her peers.  As part of the application process, applicants must submit a one-page essay, double-spaced, addressing their qualifications for this award.

 

Fendler Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Kermit Fendler (class of 1977).  It is awarded to a student who is in good standing academically. Preference will be given to a minority applicant who is an entering first-year professional student with demonstrated leadership experience.

 

Kathy McClary Fife Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Kathy McClary Fife, a 1975 alumnus, by her brother Bert McClary (class of 1966) and family.   It is awarded in the summer to a student who applies for admission to the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies summer program, to help defray the expenses of attending the program.  The recipient is selected by Mr. McClary and the Executive Director of the Pharmacy Foundation.

 

Greater Kansas City Society of Health-System Pharmacists Book Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a second-year doctor of pharmacy student who plans to pursue a career in hospital pharmacy.

 

Spencer S. Glenn Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Spencer S. Glenn by Thomas (class of 1965) and Patricia Glenn.  The award recognizes the superior pursuits of a doctor of pharmacy student in clinical research and academic study.  Preference is given to Missouri residents who are married.

 

Glenski Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Glenski family, several of whom are School of Pharmacy alumni.  The award is presented to a student in years three to five, who has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 while enrolled in the School of Pharmacy.  The student must be involved in extracurricular activities with a community service emphasis.  Preference will be given to a student who has a family member that is either in a health care profession or a UMKC alumnus.

 

Good Neighbor Pharmacy Community Scholarship

These scholarships were established by Amerisource-Bergen, Inc. in honor and support of the many independent pharmacists they serve through their organization.  The scholarships are awarded to students who are in good standing academically.  Preference is given to applicants in their fourth and fifth years, with a demonstrated interest for community pharmacy and plans to practice in either Missouri or Kansas following graduation.

 

Travis and Maqual Graham Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Travis and Maqual (class of 1994) Graham.  It is awarded to a fourth- or fifth-year student who is interested in obtaining clinical post-doctoral training, who is in good academic standing and is involved in community health care initiatives.

 

George Guastello Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Guastello family in honor of George Guastello (class of 1937), and recognizes a deserving second- through fifth-year pharmacy student interested in practicing in a community pharmacy setting.

 

Harvey H. Haynes Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Harvey Haynes (class of 1970).  It is awarded to a to a third-year student who is planning to work in an independent pharmacy in a rural area with a population under 10,000.

 

Judith Hemberger Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Judith Hemberger (class of 1975).  It is awarded to a female graduate student enrolled in the School of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology or Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.  Selection preference is given to United States citizens.

 

Bruce J. "Bud" Huber Memorial Scholarship

This  scholarship was established in memory of Bud Huber, a 1997 alumnus.  The award is given to a student in years two to five who has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and documented involvement in extracurricular activities in the area of service.  Preference is given to a pharmacy technician or intern at Express Pharmacy or an older, returning student.

 

Kavanaugh Charitable Trust Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Paul and Debbie (class of 1985) Kavanaugh.

 

Robert C. Lanman Graduate Pharmacology Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Robert Lanman, emeritus professor with the School of Pharmacy.  It is awarded to a graduate student who has pharmacology as an emphasis area.  The applicant must have completed no less than two semesters of full-time coursework and achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average.  Senior level Ph.D. students who have completed written and oral comprehensives may also apply for scholarship funding to support their dissertation research.

 

Lindman-Gershman Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Jerry (class of 1964) and Hedy Gershman, in honor of their parents.

 

Wes McIntire Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of UMKC doctor of pharmacy student and Kappa Psi Brother, Wesley McIntire.  It is awarded to a fifth-year professional year student who is a Kappa Psi Brother and who has been actively involved throughout their membership.  This brother must have been either a Kappa Psi officer or organized the Wes McIntire Volley for Charity event held annually in the spring.  The scholarship recipient is selected by the Kappa Psi members.

 

J. Leo McMahon Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of J. Leo McMahon, a pharmacy faculty member from the 1950s to the 1980s, who served as an officer of the Pharmacy Alumni Association and the Pharmacy Foundation.  It is awarded to a second-year professional year student who represents the care and professional attitudes of Dr. McMahon.

 

Joe McNerney Pharmacy Leadership Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Denise McNerney (class of 1976) in honor of her father.  The award is given to a doctor of pharmacy student who has demonstrated leadership abilities.

 

Missouri Pharmacy Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a third-year Pharm.D. student who is a Missouri resident. The recipient should be on track with their class and have maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 during the first two years of the pharmacy program. The recipient should be planning on a career in Missouri and have demonstrated involvement in their community.

 

Timothy G. Mitchell Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Tim Mitchell (class of 1996).  It is awarded to a second‑, third-, fourth- or fifth-year pharmacy student in good academic and professional standing. The student must have a stated career interest in community pharmacy with preference to those with interest in independent pharmacy.

 

Tim Mitchell Medical Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Tim Mitchell (class of 1996).  It is awarded to an active National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) student member in their third, fourth or fifth professional year.

 

Mid-Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a student in the Columbia satellite program.  Selection criteria include:  a student who is a member of the Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists; is presently employed by a heath systems pharmacy; is a high school graduate of Boone, Cole, Cooper or Callaway counties in the state of Missouri; and is currently a Missouri resident.

 

National Association of Chain Drug Stores Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who intends to pursue a career in chain community pharmacy practice following graduation.

 

Jim Newman Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Jim Newman, a 1968 alumnus.  It is awarded to a student in years three through five, with preference given to a student from Joplin or southwest Missouri.

 

Kit Ngoc Nguyen, Pharm.D. Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Kit Ngoc Nguyen (class of 2004), to be of support to students with their book or other incidental expenses.  It is awarded to a student who is in good standing academically.  Preference is given to students who plan to practice in an independent or community pharmacy upon graduation.  It is intended that the recipient use this scholarship for purchasing books or other needed supplies.

 

PBA Health/TrueCare Pharmacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Nick Smock (class of 1983 and 2002), president and CEO of PBA Health.  It is awarded to a student in their third, fourth or fifth year of school, and with a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

 

Powers Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Edwin (class of 1971) and Joy Powers.  It is awarded to a professional pharmacy student in their third, fourth or fifth year, with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.  Preference is given to a student who indicates as their first choice a career in independent/community pharmacy and who has served an internship with an independent pharmacy.

 

Prescription Solutions Scholarship

Two scholarships are awarded to students who are in good standing academically.  Preference is given to applicants in their fourth and fifth years, with a demonstrated interest in a career with a mail order pharmacy and managed care with plans to practice in either Missouri or Kansas following graduation.

 

RAN Institute Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Ruth Ann Nylen (class of 1984).  It is awarded to a female pharmacy student who has demonstrated an interest in and documented activities of strong entrepreneurial ambitions, and active involvement in UMKC athletic programs.

 

Red Cross Pharmacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Matt Hartwig (class of 1992) and Steve Hartwig (class of 1968).  Preference for the award is given to a student who is:  a direct descendant of Benjamin R. Hartwig; employed by Red Cross Pharmacy and/or from a Red Cross Pharmacy market area; from a town of less than 20,000 in population; or is employed by a privately held (independent) pharmacy company.

 

Thomas D. Ross Memorial Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Thomas Ross by Thomas (class of 1965) and Patricia Glenn.  It is awarded to a graduate student majoring in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  Selection preference is given to applicants who are United States citizens, Missouri residents, and married.  The recipient is chosen by the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee, with recommendations from the School’s Graduate Programs Committee.

 

Toni Sena Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Toni Sena, a 1978 alumnus.  It is awarded to a student in the Pharm.D. program with a minimum 2.5 grade point average, who is in earnest pursuit of a pharmacy degree.

 

Joseph G. Shalinsky Scholarship

This scholarship was established by family and friends of Joseph Shalinsky (class of 1939) in honor of his 80th birthday. The recipient must have achieved academic success (minimum 3.0 grade point average) and an interest in practicing in a community pharmacy setting after graduation.

 

Leo Shalinsky Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Arlene Shalinsky in honor of the 70th birthday of her husband, Leo (class of 1951).  The recipient of the award should be a second- or third-year student interested in practicing in a retail pharmacy.  The applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5, and be involved in extracurricular activities.

 

William & Carole Sitland Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Patricia Marken, professor in the School of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, in memory of her parents, William and Carole Sitland.  It is awarded to a third-, fourth- or fifth-year student who is in good standing academically.  Preference is given to students who demonstrate the personal characteristics of integrity, a strong work ethic, generosity of spirit and a commitment to quality in all that they do for the profession of pharmacy.  Special consideration is given to students who also demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

Smock Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Nick Smock (class of 1983 and 2002).  It is awarded to a third-, fourth- or fifth-year student who currently is in good standing, and who has an interest in community or independent pharmacy.

 

Spalitto Pharmacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Pete (1986 alumnus) and Jude (1979 alumnus) Spalitto.  It is awarded to a professional pharmacy student in their third, fourth or fifth year, with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.  Preference is given to a student who indicates as their first choice a career with an independent or independent chain pharmacy and who has preferably served an internship with an independent pharmacy.

 

Anthony J. Spalitto, Sr. Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Anthony Spalitto, Sr. (class of 1963), by his family.  It is awarded to a doctor of pharmacy student in years two through four who has a minimum 2.5 grade point average and has expressed interest in independent community pharmacy.

 

Bruce and Shirley Stocker Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Bruce (class of 1973) and Shirley Stocker.  It is awarded to a student in the first through fifth professional year, who is a full-time Missouri or Kansas resident, has maintained a 3.0 grade point average, has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in institutional pharmacy, and is involved in an appropriate professional organization.

 

David A. Strauch, R.Ph. Scholarship

This scholarship was established by David Strauch (class of 1985) to support students seeking a career in independent pharmacy and who may be wishing to return to a small rural community.  One or two scholarships will be given each year to a first- through fourth-year student who is in good academic standing and shows evidence of leadership experience.  Preference is given to a student wishing to pursue a career with an independent pharmacy and/or in a community of less than 10,000 people following graduation.

 

Harry N. Tishk Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honor of Harry N. Tishk, a 1964 alumnus. It is awarded to a first-year student who was a provisional student the year prior to receiving the award.

 

Fred Tonnies Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Fred Tonnies through the Missouri Law Seminar.  It is awarded to a doctor of pharmacy student based on a point system. Points are assigned by the following criteria: a student who is a graduate of a high school in Boone County, Missouri; is a past or current employee at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospitals and Clinics; and has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.6.

 

Phyllis Vaughn Scholarship

This scholarship was established with donations from alumni, faculty and staff in honor of Phyllis Vaughn, upon her retirement after over 30 years on the School of Pharmacy staff.  It is awarded to a student in the second through fifth year of the professional pharmacy program who expresses a caring and friendly attitude towards others. Preference is given to a student who exemplifies this attitude through involvement in extracurricular activities helping people.

 

Mathew W. "Bill" Wilson Scholarship

The scholarship was established in honor of Mathew W. “Bill” Wilson, a 1950 alumnus and faculty member who also served as an officer of the Pharmacy Foundation.  It is awarded to students whose integrity and professionalism matches that of Mr. Wilson.

 

Wilson Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Marcus (class of 1996) and Melissa (class of 1998) Wilson.  Preference for the award is given to an applicant who is a high school graduate of Bates, Morgan or Jasper counties in Missouri, or Cherokee, Miami or Johnson counties in Kansas.  Preference is also given to an applicant who indicates as their first choice a career in an independent pharmacy following graduation and/or a preference to work in one of the aforementioned counties.

 

Larry Windmoeller Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Fred Tonnies through the Missouri Law Seminar.  It is awarded to a doctor of pharmacy student based on a point system. Points are assigned by the following criteria: a student who is a graduate of a high school in Boone County, Missouri; is a past or current employee at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospitals and Clinics; and has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.6.

 

Lawrence G. Windmoeller/Mid-Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Mid-Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists in honor of their retiring president, Larry Windmoeller.  It is awarded to a student in the Columbia satellite program meeting the following criteria:  is a member of the Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists; is presently employed by a health systems pharmacy; is a high school graduate of Boone, Cole, Cooper or Callaway counties in the State of Missouri; and is currently a Missouri resident.
