Biography:

Dr. Garavalia is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Social and Administrative Sciences. She completed her undergraduate work at Clemson University and earned her doctorate in Educational Psychology and Research from the University of South Carolina. She joined the faculty at UMKC in 1999. After serving on the faculties in the School of Education and College of Arts and Sciences (Psychology), she transferred to the School of Pharmacy to direct planning and assessment activities. Her research focuses on self-regulation of behaviors, thoughts, and cognitions in relation to academic achievement and personal health management. She has collaborated with the Mid America Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Hospital since 2003 and has been a Co-Principal Investigator on a number of industry-sponsored contracts investigating patient medication adherence. While at UMKC, Dr. Garavalia has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in classroom assessment, psychometrics, research methodology, educational psychology and learning theory. In 2007, she was awarded the Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Research Interests

Medication adherence in cardiovascular disease patients and the assessment of risk for nonadherence; health status, decision making, and lifestyle changes related to cardiovascular disease treatment; health messaging and patient education; academic assessment and program evaluation; self-regulation of health and academic behaviors.
