MISSION STATEMENT

We develop confident, effective and innovative community pharmacy practitioners who will advance the profession and improve community health by providing superior patient care in a financially sustainable manner. Graduates of this program will be qualified to accept positions as clinical pharmacists in community pharmacy settings.

WHO PROVIDES THE RESIDENCY TRAINING?

The University of Missouri-Kansas City offers three PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency positions in affiliation with three leaders in community pharmacy.

residency 1Price Chopper Pharmacy is a family-owned grocery store chain located in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Balls Foods, the parent company, is a self-insured company with 3,300 covered lives. As a resident, you will care for employees who have diabetes and cardiovascular conditions through disease-state management programs modeled after the Asheville project. The resident will work on programs for all 20 pharmacies, and with two additional Balls community residents affiliated with the University of Kansas. The residency is based in an upscale Price Chopper supermarket in North Kansas City designed for patient care. The company provides outstanding corporate support for pharmacy services. Red Cross Pharmacy, Inc. is family-owned and has served patients and customers in Missouri since 1854. The corporation consists of eleven retail pharmacies, three long-term care pharmacies, and a medical equipment company. The resident will work on patient care programs for all 12 pharmacies and collaborate with the Red Cross Pharmacy Corporate Office. The residency is based out of the Red Cross Pharmacy in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Red Cross Pharmacy is an employee-minded, customer-focused, and service-driven pharmacy organization. Walgreens Health System Pharmacy is located at Truman Medical Center on the Health Sciences campus of the University of Missouri at Kansas City. This premier pharmacy location offers a variety of Innovative clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed complex therapies such as HIV/AIDS, oncology, transplant and Hepatitis C. The community pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff, case managers, and administrators to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. All residency sites are advanced community rotation training sites, have access to drug information resources, and participate in local, state and national leadership activities.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS AFFILIATION?

residency 2A university-affiliated residency program offers the resident experience in a variety of community pharmacy settings, an expansive group of mentors from whom to learn, and a broad range of opportunities to develop the skills needed for success in her/his future career. University faculty play an integral role in residency training and offer mentorship. Through the university partnership, the resident has the opportunity to participate in a range of training experiences including ambulatory care experiences focusing on family practice, diabetes mellitus, anticoagulation, HIV/AIDS, and pain management. Residency experiences are individualized to the needs and areas of interest of each resident.

Residents who are interested in pursuing an academic career will be able to arrange additional experiences in teaching and curriculum development. They will also be able to participate in the UMKC Residents Teaching Certificate Program.

Selected residents will be employed by their site. The stipend is $41,000. Residents will receive paid vacation/holiday/sick leave, health insurance and a travel stipend. Residents will receive a clinical adjunct appointment to the faculty and teach students both in the classroom and in the clinical arena. They will receive a university e mail account, access to databases and search engines at the Health Sciences Library, and the ability to use the UMKC Drug Information Center to help answer challenging drug-related questions. Finally, we will help you find a post-residency position that uses all your new skills.

ACCREDITATION

This residency is accredited by the ASHP Commission on Credentialing, in affiliation with the American Pharmacists Association.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

We seek motivated candidates who are dedicated to advancing community pharmacy while delivering a high level of direct patient care. Selection of residents will be based on their community experience, interest in advancing community pharmacy practice, desire to provide direct patient care, and ability to display leadership potential. Residents must be motivated and self-directed individuals.

Applicants must have a Pharm.D. or equivalent experience and be eligible for licensure in Missouri. Candidates should submit a completed application, academic transcript, curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and three letters of recommendation plus the completed standardized reference found in PHORCAS. Applications will be received using PHORCAS. Qualified candidates will be invited for an on-site interview and selection will take place through the ASHP Residency Match Program.
