~ Frequently Asked
Questions ~
What if I have already taken several science courses
that I see is offered during the actual pharmacy curriculum, will I have to take
those again?
The answer is maybe not. If Human Anatomy w/ lab,
Microbiology w/ lab, Organic Chemistry I & II, both w/ labs, &/or Cell Biology w/ lab have been taken within the last
four years prior to entry, completed with a grade of "C" or better, and are
equivalent to our courses, then students are eligible to petition out of the
courses while fulfilling other elective courses usually reserved for later in
the program. This however, will not shorten the time spent at UMKC.
Can you offer any other
information on the Nuclear Pharmacy Emphasis soon available on the MU campus?
Since the Nuclear Pharmacy Emphasis will not start
until the third year of the program, we have not finalized the offerings.
The goal is to create a track that will prepare Pharm.D. graduates for a
career in nuclear pharmacy and certification. Since UMC has a nuclear
medicine program, we are partnering with their faculty and facilities for
these offerings.
Does the UMKC School of Pharmacy put emphasis on
in-state students?
No, we give no advantages to in-state students over
out-of-state students.
Does it increase my chances of admission if I take the
prerequisites at UMKC?
No, we take course work from any accredited college as long
as the courses are equivalent.
Does the UMKC SOP require the Pharmacy College Admission
Test (PCAT)?
Yes we do. Click
here for more information on how we look at the PCAT.
Does the UMKC SOP accept classes transferred from other
colleges?
Yes, we accept course work from any accredited colleges, as
long as the courses are equivalent.
Do I have to have all the prerequisites completed before
I can apply?
No; however prerequisites must be completed with a satisfactory grade
(C or higher) before school starts in the Fall Term of entry.
Is CLEP credit & AP courses acceptable for prerequisite courses?
CLEP credits are acceptable for everything except math and
science coursework. Click
here
to learn more about CLEP & AP.
Some of my earlier college grades are not so good
although my recent ones are excellent. Is
there anything I can do to improve my GPA to an acceptable level?
Yes. The SOP
has a forgiveness policy for application purposes only. An applicant can retake courses in which low grades were
received at the
same or another institution. If a higher grade is achieved, the School of
Pharmacy will count only the
higher grade in the application GPA.
What do I need to apply?
Contact the School of Pharmacy for an
application packet that includes: School of
Pharmacy supplemental application, letter(s) of recommendation,
information on how to sign up for the PCAT.
How does the application process work
for students in college?
Once the application deadline has passed, all applications
are evaluated in terms of cumulative college GPA, science/math college GPA, and
PCAT scores. The top 240 or so applicants
are then invited to be interviewed on campus on a Saturday in late March or
early April of the year. 95 students are accepted
to the UMKC Campus and 28 students are accepted to the MU campus. The
remaining applicants go on an alternate list to be admitted as
openings occur.
