The Western
Missouri Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency Program (PGY2) offers a one-year
residency position at Western Missouri Mental Health Center (WMMHC) and
Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center (NMPRC).
The facilities are Missouri Department of Mental Health Institutions and
are affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of
Pharmacy. PGY-2 Residency Program
Accreditation has been granted by the American Society of Health System
Pharmacists.
Two psychiatric
pharmacy resident (PGY2) positions are available each year, with one resident at
each location. The residency training program prepares the clinician for the
challenges of providing primary care and consultation in psychiatric pharmacy
practice.
PROGRAM FACULTY
Ellie Elliott,
Pharm.D., BCPP provides clinical pharmacy services to the adult intermediate
care inpatient unit at WMMHC and serves as the Residency Program Director.
Dr. Elliott is also adjunct clinical faculty with both the UMKC and the
University of Kansas (KU) Schools of Pharmacy.
Robin Hieber,
Pharm.D., BCPP provides clinical pharmacy services to an acute adult
and child/adolescent inpatient unit at WMMHC.
Dr. Hieber is adjunct clinical faculty with both the UMKC and KU Schools
of Pharmacy.
Joan Hunter,
R.N., BSN, CRCC is the Clinical Research Associate. She coordinates both
original and pharmaceutical sponsored research at Western Missouri Mental Health
Center.
Leigh Anne Nelson, Pharm.D., BCPP conducts research
and provides clinical pharmacy services to an acute inpatient unit at WMMHC.
Dr. Nelson serves as a consultant to the facility and is an Assistant
Professor with UMKC School of Pharmacy.
Leonard Ramlatchman, R.Ph., BCPP is the NMPRC
Director of Pharmacy. He coordinates
the administration experience for the resident and serves as a liaison between
the Psychopharmacy Research and Education Program and the staff at NMPRC.
Sheila Schmidt,
M.S., R.Ph., is the WMMHC Director of Pharmacy and provides patient care
services to the adult acute care units. She is also adjunct clinical faculty for
UMKC and University of Kansas (KU) Schools Pharmacy.
Roger Sommi,
Pharm.D., BCPP, FCCP coordinates the research efforts and provides clinical
pharmacy services to an acute inpatient unit at WMMHC. Dr. Sommi serves as a
consultant to the facility and in difficult management cases throughout the
State of Missouri. He is also Professor with UMKC School of Pharmacy.
Steven Stoner, Pharm.D., BCPP is a Clinical
Associate Professor with the UMKC School of Pharmacy and serves as the Residency
Program Coordinator and provides clinical patient care services to NMPRC.
Dr. Stoner serves as a consultant to Heartland Health Systems Hospital
and Family Guidance Behavioral Health in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Elizabeth Winans,
Pharm.D., BCPP provides outpatient pharmacy services to psychiatric patients at
Truman Medical Center-Behavioral Health and is Clinical Associate Professor at
UMKC School of Pharmacy. Dr. Winans
serves as preceptor for the required outpatient rotation.
ASSOCIATED FACULTY
Diane Buckingham,
M.D. is a private practice child Psychiatrist who provides direction for the
outpatient clinic portion of the child and adolescent psychiatry rotation in
Overland Park, Kansas.
Louis Giron,
M.D., is a board certified Neurologist and Crystal Obering, Pharm.D., MBA, BCPS
is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UMKC School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Obering serves as the primary preceptor for the off-site neurology
rotation at WMMHC with the practice site being at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical
Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Mignon Makos,
M.D. is a board certified, private practice Neurologist and serves as the
primary preceptor for the off-site neurology rotation for the resident atNMPRC
with her practice at St. Joseph Neurology in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Ross Shuman, M.D.
is the Medical Director of the adult acute care inpatient unit at Heartland
Health Systems Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Dr. Shuman serves as the preceptor for the off-site acute care rotation
for the resident at NMPRC.
Colleen Sullivan,
MSN, ARNP and Dr. Rekha Prasad provide psychiatric services to inpatients and
residential patients at Crittenton’s Children’s Center.
Colleen Sullivan serves as primary preceptor for the off-site child and
adolescent psychiatric rotation and also treats outpatients at the Blue Springs
Clinic.
PRIMARY TRAINING LOCATIONS
Western Missouri Mental Health Center (WMMHC)
WMMHC is an 80
bed comprehensive mental health facility located in the heart of Kansas City,
Missouri. WMMHC is part of the
Hospital Hill Complex which includes the UMKC Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy,
Dentistry and Nursing; Truman Medical Center; and Children’s Mercy Hospital.
WMMHC’s comprehensive services include emergency room screening, crisis
intervention, acute and intermediate/long-term adult inpatient treatment, as
well as child and adolescent treatment.
WMMHC also serves as an accredited site for UMKC Psychiatry Resident
training.
Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center
(NMPRC)
NMPRC is a 108-bed long-term rehabilitation center
that focuses on the rehabilitation of psychiatric forensic patients.
While the majority of patients are considered to be in long-term
placement, patients are also placed at NMPRC for pretrial evaluations and for
assistance regaining competency.
The program also provides Psychopharmacy consultation services to the
outpatient psychiatric population at Family Guidance Behavioral Health and to
the acute-care population at Heartland Health Systems Hospital, both of which
are located in the community of St. Joseph, Missouri.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING LOCATIONS
Heartland Health Systems Hospital
Heartland Health Systems Hospital is the home of a
30-bed acute care psychiatric inpatient unit.
Residents are required to spend at least one month in the acute care
setting to gain experience in meeting patients needs and the challenges that
health care providers face with managed care organizations.
The chief psychiatrist at Heartland is Dr. Ross Shuman.
Dr. Shuman has a wide variety of experience in treating the mentally ill
and is very much a proponent of clinical pharmacy services.
At Heartland the resident will be responsible for patient care activities
(side effect management, drug interactions, selection of drug therapy),
providing staff inservices, and conducting patient interviews (mental status
exams).
St. Joseph Neurology
St. Joseph Neurology is a private Neurology practice
in St. Joseph, Missouri that serves as the site of the Neurology rotation for
NMPRC. Dr. Mignon Makos, a board
certified Neurologist, is the primary preceptor for the rotation. The rotation
includes inpatient experience at Heartland Hospital and outpatient work through
Dr. Makos’s private office. The
resident is responsible for providing inservices to the neurology department
staff, assisting with patient assessment, providing medication evaluations, and
making therapeutic recommendations.
Family Guidance Behavioral Health
Family Guidance is a non-profit outpatient provider
for mental health outpatients in the St. Joseph and surrounding area community.
Family Guidance serves over 3,000 patients per year.
The experience provides an outpatient setting for the NMPRC resident to
train in the provision of outpatient services.
The services provided include patient medication education, staff
education, medication histories, medication interaction reviews, and clinical
therapeutic recommendations.
Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health Services
Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health is the
largest outpatient provider of community mental health services to clients in
downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The experience involves providing pharmacy
services that include medication education to patients and staff, consultation
services including medication histories, and health assessment and intake
services. Elizabeth Winans, Pharm.D,
BCPP serves as the primary preceptor for this required outpatient rotation.
Participation in the Consult-Liaison team at TMC hospital is typically a
portion of this experience.
Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center
Veterans’ Affairs
Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri serves as the site for the Neurology
rotation for WMMHC. Dr. Giron is the
primary preceptor for the rotation, which includes inpatient experience at the
VA hospital, as well outpatient clinic work. Dr. Giron treats a variety of
neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease as well as
migraine headaches. The resident
assists with patient assessments, providing treatment recommendations, and
in-service presentations to the Neurology Department.
Crittenton Children’s Center
Crittenton
Children’s Center in Kansas City, Missouri provides behavioral health
services for children aged 5 to 18 years on a 96-acre campus in Southeast Kansas
City. Crittenton
serves as the off-site component to the child/adolescent psychiatric rotation
that is typically combined with WMMHC’s own inpatient child/adolescent
psychiatric unit experience. Colleen
Sullivan, MSN, ARNP and Dr. Rekha Prasad provide psychiatric services to
inpatients, outpatients and residential patients at Crittenton.
TRAINING AND SERVICE
Residents are an
integral part of patient care services while in the program. Supervision and
direction are provided by the preceptors. However, resident independence is
expected and encouraged. Required clinical rotations include: Adult Acute Care,
Adult Intermediate/Long-term Care, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Neurology,
Outpatient Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Pharmacy Administration. Optional
experiences include: additional
month of required rotation, Substance Abuse Services, Emergency Psychiatric
Services, Research Methods, Geriatric Psychiatry and Consult Liaison Psychiatry.
FORMAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
In addition to
the individual supervision received during the psychiatric pharmacy residency,
classroom experience is also an option available through the medical residents
training program. All classes are conducted by members of the program’s clinical
teaching staff.
Residents also
have the opportunity to further develop their teaching skills. Educational
responsibilities include didactic and clinical instruction of pharmacy and
medical students, nursing students, psychiatry residents, and medical staff.
“Psychotropics Made Simple” lectures for medical students, Psychiatric
Pharmacotherapy lectures for Residents, Resident Rounds, Journal Club and Grand
Rounds presentations to the Medical Staff are activities in which the residents
participate. Additionally, satellite based programming is available to further
enhance the educational learning environment.
In-service programs, journal club presentations to the pharmacy staff,
and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee presentations are also expected
activities of the resident.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Residents will
participate in ongoing research projects being conducted at either facility.
Residents are required to complete one administrative project with the Director
of Pharmacy and one clinical residency project.
The resident is required to formulate a research idea, complete the
research proposal, obtain IRB approval when necessary, implement the project,
and publish results in paper, abstract, or journal form.
STIPEND AND BENEFITS
All residents
receive a 12-month appointment beginning July 1. An adjunct clinical faculty
instructor appointment is awarded by the University of Missouri-Kansas City
School of Pharmacy.
Salary: $35,000 taxable
income funded by Pharmacy Systems, Inc.
Leave: The resident may accumulate
1.75 hours per pay period of sick-time.
There are 10 days of paid vacation/personal time per year.
Medical Insurance: The resident may choose to enroll for medical, dental
and vision insurance through Pharmacy Systems, Inc (PSI).
Residents are not covered for the first 30 days of employment.

Applicants should
have a Pharm.D. degree or equivalent experience with completion of a PGY-1
Pharmacy Residency Program. Interested individuals must send a completed
